Reasons and Remedies for difficulty in dealing with numerical problems in Physics
Abstract
Problem solving is a fundamental skill that is necessary for effective learning. The mathematical problems are well known source of difficulty for students attempting numerical problem solving questions in the field of science education. As I going through my action research based on it, I found that most of the students felt trouble to solve numerical problems in classrooms as well as in exams. Poor mathematical skills may be one of the reason for it. The article study the reasons and remedies for difficulty in dealing with numerical problems in Physics among school students.
Introduction
Basic mathematical principles are an absolute necessity if one is to understand any scientific phenomena. However, it is widely recognized that students in High school lack of understanding of mathematical concepts and hence this negatively results depth in subject. That is Mathematics and Science are interrelated.
Hogan (2000) asserts that one must be numerate in a particular situation one needs three types of knowledge ; mathematical, contextual and strategic. Students must first familiarity with these mathematical concepts before they are able to use them in other domain s such as the various mathematical area of science. Without the prerequisites mathematical knowledge , a student will be unable to identify the mathematics in a particular situation.
Objectives
- To study the reasons for difficulty of students in dealing with numerical problems.
- To give awareness to students about their problem solving skill and to improve it.
- To create a deep understanding about the subject through problem solving.
Methodology
During my school internship program, I took classes for ninth standard students. I took the chapter 'Motion and laws of motion' in Physics. As a part of my instruction I conducted a unit test based on the chapter. Unfortunately I found that majority of the students were unable and weak to solve numerical problems in it. Beside the test, I noticed that they were also poor in doing home work problems in class room. The assessments that I took and the assignments that I gave, bring a clear picture about their problem solving skill.
Data Collection
Class Test:
When I conducted the first test based on the chapter, I realized that most of the students avoided numerical problems in the portion. Those who were attended was did it wrong. That is they mistaken the problem because of lack of arithmetic skills. After giving the answer sheets, I did an enquiry about this. I personally ask the students about the reasons for neglecting the problems and make it wrong. I get an idea about it. I make some remedial measures to improve their problem solving skills.
Reasons for difficulty in solving numerical problems.
- Lack of interest to Physics.
- Lack of understanding of theoretical aspect of problem.
- Lack of basic arithmetic skills.
- Fear of Physics.
- Lack of logical thinking.
Remedies for difficulty in solving numerical problems.
- Workout more problems related to the topic.
- Provide supplementary resources for doing problems.
- Group study.
- Special coaching for weaker students.
- Use leisure time for developing arithmetic skills.
- ICT enabled teaching.
- Promote effective teaching strategies.
Remedial test:
After studied their reasons, I took a remedial test based on the above suggestions. I found a good improvement in problem solving skills of the students in this test. It was a nice experience.
Conclusion
Majority of students in my class struggle to deal with numerical problems in their subject, especially in Physics. Through this study, I understood the reasons and remedies for difficulty in dealing with numerical problems in Physics. The various strategies provided to the students had a significant effect in improving their problem solving skills.
